In the first of our feature makers for Wirral MakeFest 2024, Ali Pickard -The Yaffingale uses craft techniques within fine art sculptures. Originally part of a Women’s Welding Collective, via years working with recycled design in South America, she is now based in North Wales and recently returned to making a new textile and mixed media collection. She often uses historical references to reflect on modern society and women’s stories. She is interested in which stories get to be told, and who is telling the tale.

Each piece can take hundreds of hours to complete and involve textile, hand embroidery, wood, metal, and automata. Her artist’s name is The Yaffingale, which is an old word for Woodpecker.

She will be on hand on the 1st of June at Wirral MakeFest and sharing about her use of materials and techniques.

Details of which venue she will be based out of on the 1st of June will be released nearer the time. @theyaffingale
