In Birkenhead, across the River Mersey from Liverpool, not far from the Birkenhead Central Library stands a house with an interior like no other. Welcome to Ron’s Place, home of the late Ron Gittins. A complex and colourful character, to say the least, Ron’s obsession with ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome and all things romantic led him to transform his rented flat into his very own highly ornate classical ‘villa’. Many people were intrigued by the extraordinary totemic sculpture at the entrance but very few knew of the astonishing fantasy world that lay within. The journey to saving the building really engaged the public’s imagination during Covid.
The team from Wirral Arts & Culture Community Land Trust will bring highlights of some of the workshops and events they have hosted and share their plans for Ron’s Place – the building needs to be preserved and the artwork conserved. Ron’s Place is the first ‘Outsider Art’ environment to be listed in the UK through Historic England.
Check them out at the Birkenhead Central Library 10-4 on the 10th of May.
