“90% OF FURNITURE SOLD IN THE UK IS DESTINED FOR LANDFILL!” Adam Green
THE UK DUMPS 300,000 TONNES OF BULKY REUSABLE ITEMS OF FURNITURE ANNUALLY!
Hi, I’m Karen, founder of Re-jiggery based in Hoylake. My work is predominantly upholstery, soft furnishings and furniture painting commissions. I also run workshops and social eco crafting sessions. With a background in Environmental Science sustainability continues to be my driving force. An eco conscious approach is taken to each and every aspect of my work, whether it’s diverting items from landfill, eliminating or reducing harmful materials, reusing and/or recycling, or simply promoting eco friendly alternatives to environmentally damaging and toxic materials.
My fabric waste is minimised by crafting smaller items or by re-distributing anything I can’t use to local small community ventures and organisations who can. Even my tiniest fabric scraps are used to fill items like pouffes, door-stops and toys. I also use a large quantity of discarded off-cuts, some donated and some I collect from local businesses.
I’m delighted to be participating in Wirral’s 2nd MakeFest event where I’ll be sharing information about the negative environmental and health impact of modern upholstery manufacturing processes and materials and introducing a variety of eco-friendly/sustainable and healthier options currently available on the market.
