Introducing Wirral Libraries Story Patchwork Project celebrating Wirral Borough of Culture!
Your challenge? To create a 20cm FABRIC SQUARE (including a 0.5cm border) depicting ‘Your Wirral’.
It could be a favourite book, a place, people, a memory, a poem, a car, a flower, a bird, the sea, a pet, a journey, music related – anything goes – it’s YOUR story!
You could stitch, embroider, crochet, draw, paint, write, print, glue – whatever works for you!
First – look around your home/school/workplace for things you could use to bring your story to life – any old clothes, sheets, a box of fabrics just waiting to be used, photos, sparkles, paints, an old jumper? Unleash your imagination!
Then – begin creating! At home, in your lunch hour, in your craft group or classroom, or bring your patch to one of OUR weekly Craft Groups (ask at your library).
No materials at home? Then look out for our upcoming ‘sewcials’ where you can use donated material and create in company. If you have material you can donate (especially cotton, fleece or old quilts) and/or equipment like scissors, needles, pins, threads, fabric pens. OBVIOUSLY we are having a “SEWCIAL” AT WIRRAL MAKEFEST in Birkenhead Library on the 1st of June 10am until 4pm.
You have plenty of time to get your patch to us – by the end of July – along with your name & a brief description. We hope to display the final patchwork(s) from October 2024 onwards.
“The quilt as an object has been, and still is, central to communities and cultures all around the world. Born from practical necessity, quilts also have the ability to tell stories” (Julius Arthur – ‘Modern Quilting: a contemporary guide to quilting by hand”)
Let’s put YOUR story, YOUR Wirral & Your Libraries on the map! Spread the word!
